Do These Four Things After Moving Into A New Home
You have just moved in to a new home. Congratulations!
But before you put your feet up on your coffee table and relax, there are four things that you need to do.
- Change the locks. Many of you will wonder why I even mention this, but you might be surprised to learn how many people don’t take this step as soon as they take ownership of a property. You don’t know who has a key to your new front door. So take this very important step and call a locksmith immediately after you close and take possession of your new property.
- Steam clean your carpets. Yes, they might look clean, but you never know what has been using these huge “air filters” on the floors of your new home. Steam cleaning is fairly inexpensive and you can even rent a cleaner and do it yourself if you wish.
- Become familiar with your breaker box and your main water valve. Just imagine that you are sitting in your new home and suddenly you see smoke coming from one of the power outlets. That is exactly what happened to me when I was visiting my parents’ new home. Luckily, my parents had checked out the breaker box and knew which switch controlled that wall of outlets. Water flooding your laundry room can be just as bad. Know where you can shut off the electricity and water quickly should the need arise.
- Wash down the cabinet shelves. We always put shelving paper in the cabinets of our new homes. And before the paper goes down, we scrub the shelves. Regardless of how well you inspected the house, I suspect that you will find unwanted items (evidence of bugs, or worse) in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
Now, after taking care of these easy but necessary chores, fix your favorite drink and relax in your new home.
